Missionary years

Clyde served his mission in 1940. It began during the end of 1940, first part of 1941. He served in the northern states mission (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin)

Clyde’s First area – Vincennes, Indiana. Gary (Clyde’s son) also served in this town. Gary served in the Indiana/Michigan Mission during the early 1970’s.

Clyde’s Second area– Portsmith, Ohio. While here, Clyde drove around a 1931 Chevy. He toured southern OH, and held cottage meetings in member’s homes. Clyde performed service by chopping wood and also slept in a cow pasture.

Clyde’s Third area- Eau Claire, WI. Clyde remembers crossing the river to Chippewa falls in –26 temperatures. Eau Claire was beautiful in the springtime. (I have driven through Chippewa Falls a few times, and the river is wide and very beautiful actually.)

Clyde remembers taking the train which was called the 400 traveling from Chicago to Minneapolis in 400 minutes. They took this train to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Chicago was a huge city at that time. Incidentally, Clyde has been to Chicago 4 times in his life, roasted twice and froze twice.

Paul Wallace and Clyde walked the highways in La Crosse, WI. They also stopped in Wisconsin dells. Paul Wallace was a close friend of Jim Glenn, who married Lois’ sister Gwen.

Clyde’s Fourth area - Champaign, Illinois - Home of University of Illinois. In Champaign Clyde met L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles who was his replacement in that area. Clyde was only with L. Tom Perry for 3 weeks, but he reflects about this experience frequently. Anyone who knows Clyde, knows that he was companions with L. Tom Perry.

Clyde’s Fifth area – Muncy, IN This area included South bend and Fort Wayne. Clyde was the supervising elder. While in South Bend, Clyde attended a Notre Dame / Michigan game for $3 a ticket. This was Clyde’s last area of his mission.

Although Clyde doesn’t remember the names of all of his companions, he does remember the ones who became General Authorities in The Church of Jesus Chris of Latter Day Saints. Included in that list are Robert L. Backman, Theodore Tuttle, Marion D. Hanks and L. Tom Perry.

After Clyde’s mission, he met many of his former mission companions as a military flight purcer.
Clyde returned home from his mission in 1943, ready to serve our country.
