Teenage years

Clyde and his dad on the porch of their home in Los Angeles, when he was 18 years old.

Clyde attended LA High School – close to Ripon and Olympic Blvd in LA.
Clyde was a good student when he was in elementary school and Junior high. Clyde, like many of his grandsons and granddaughters, had trouble concentrating in high school. The Jr. High principal gave Clyde permission to take a long vacation during school because of his good grades.
Clyde loved to play tennis. He played with Iretta. Iretta was a good athlete. His brother David was also a good athlete. Bernice was in Clyde’s words a “bad athlete”. In a race where all the siblings participated in different divisions, Clyde won his division, Iretta won hers, David won his and Bernice was last place in her division.
Clyde played tennis with Budge Patty when he was 13 and Budge was 12. In 1951 Budge won the Wimbledon championship. Clyde won a match against the future Wimbledon Champion. Bob Rodgers was another LA city champion that he beat.
Clyde’s mother and father (Isaac Davis and Margaret) always went to church. They were very active in all organizations. In Clyde’s words, church was their whole life. The Wilshire ward had the best activities of any ward in the church. They had dances every Tuesday night. Mickey Rooney brought his dance band many times. Lorraine Day and Rhonda Fleming (Lois Andrews and Marilyn Lewis) were part of the Wilshire Ward.
Clyde was president of the young men. He loved activities. Clyde had a date with the centennial queen of Utah once. He was popular that night. That popular night happened in the year 1939. Clyde participated in all types of activities, and his friends came from them.
Clyde always went camping when he was younger. During the depression, Clyde was the only one in the family working for a time. He would get day old bread and food for the family from his job at Ralph’s Grocery Store. Posted by Picasa
